Rashaun Richardson 6’7” PF Tech- The surprise of the tournament would have to be Rashaun Richardson. He’s at least 6’6” and much more likely to be a legit 6’7”. He is very long and jumps extremely well. In the game that I saw, he was active on both ends of the floor and crashed the boards hard. Richardson also had two big-time blocks. Offensively, he had a nice touch around the basket along with decent footwork. He had a play where he caught and swept baseline from the 3 and finished the play with a dunk. He’s a player mid-majors need to see next weekend.
Aaron Brennan 6’6” PF Guerin Catholic- Brennan was really impressive against the Eric Gordon 16’s in the semi-final. He is definitely still growing as he is a legit 6-6 now and at the start of the high school season I would not have given him 6-5. He had a two-handed dunk going full speed on a fast break that I don’t think he could have done too long ago. His skill set has always been really good especially with his back to the basket and as a spot-up 3-point shooter. He is definitely inching closer and closer to high-major status.
Bryce Lienhoop 6’6” PF Columbus East- This was the first time that I saw Lienhoop and I was very impressed. Right away, his game reminds me of 2012’s J.T. Yoho. He can do a little bit of everything offensively. He can handle the ball, he can shoot it, and he is really good around the rim. He’s only an average athlete, but can play inside and outside at 6-6. Mid’s and low’s should check in on him.
Mike Jones 6’5” SF Tech- I thought Mike Jones really struggled against Eric Gordon’s. He took some bad 3’s and he struggled to finish in transition. His offensive game is getting to the rim and being able to finish. He isn’t an above the rim guy at this point. His attitude and effort have been improving, but they are still sub-par. Jones has the talent to be a mid-major prospect, but he has a long ways to go to get to that point.
Mangisto Deng 6’6” SF Mooseheart Academy- Deng didn’t have a ton of production against Eric Gordon but he has good length and has a nice looking outside shot. Most of the A-Hope kids don’t have the shooting mechanics that Deng does. I look forward to seeing more of Deng this spring.
Jacob Johnson 6’5” PF Mooresville- I was hearing a lot of hype on Johnson leading up to AAU season and he is certainly a good looking player. He just didn’t quite live up to the hype that I was hearing so that hurts my first impressions of him. He’s a good athlete that can jump really well plus he is well built for a sophomore. Johnson is most productive around the rim. He plays in the post in high school and it looks like that is where he is most comfortable right now. His athleticism will give him a chance to transition smoothly to the perimeter though. Mids and lows need to have Johnson on their radar.
Sean Sellers 6’5” SF Greensburg- I was really impressed with the defensive job that he did this weekend. He showed more defensive intensity and focus than I saw during the high school season. He has a good stroke from the outside and can really elevate around the rim. I would like him to be a little bit more fluid when he is attacking the basket, but he is still adjusting to being a pure perimeter player since he plays in the post in high school. He should be a no-brainer for mid-majors with a chance to be a high-major prospect.
Jacob Foster 6’6” PF Wapahani- Foster caught my eye with his aggressive, physical nature in the post. He also has a couple of nice moves along with a good touch around the basket. Foster is a good leaper and pretty strong. He’s a player that low-majors should take a look at and mids should keep on their radar.
Grant Evans 6’3” SG Wapahani- First time seeing Evans since last summer and he wasn’t able to do much against Eric Gordon All-Stars. He’s a great pure shooter, but he doesn’t add too much else when his shot isn’t going. He is a legit 6’3” now with good length. He needs to continue to improve his driving game.
Grant Sims 6’1” PG Bloomington North- Sims was good in the two games that I saw. He’s quick and when he gets to the basket, he finds a way to score. Sims is also a tough kid and will defend. He would be a nice player at the low-major level and possibly the mid-major level.
Bryant McIntosh 6’3” SG Greensburg- McIntosh was one of the stars of the tournament in my eyes. He shot well the whole tournament although I know some of the shots were a little quicker than his coach Brian Keeton would have liked. I’m really impressed with his mid-range and closer game though. He can finish above the rim in transition, but in the half-court he usually goes with a floater and he uses the glass well too. Mid-majors should be on him and if he grows another 2 inches, he has a chance to be a high-major prospect.
Sam Logwood 6’5” SF Lawrence North-A lot of first time observers of Logwood got drunk off his athleticism. There is no doubt that he is one of the best athletes in the 2014 class in Indiana. His offensive skill set has a long ways to go though. He knocked down a couple of 3’s in the tournament, but he is very inconsistent from the outside right now. In rhythm off the catch, he is an ok shooter but when he tries to do more than that, he struggles. He is one of my favorite players in the 2014 class though because of his athleticism and he will get after people defensively.
Troy Spears 6’4” SF Park Tudor (New Mexico commit)- Spear did not have a good showing this weekend. He struggled offensively in just about every phase as he was turnover-prone and didn’t score very much at all except in transition. He has a lot of work to do in order to be a high-major wing.
Tayler Persons 6’1” CG Kokomo- Persons is a fun player to watch because of his toughness. He’s a quarterback playing point guard…literally as he has started at quarterback for Kokomo since his freshman year. Although not a great shooter, he has a knack for knocking down the big shot. Persons is an ok athlete, but not great. Low-majors should look into him.
Zach McRoberts 6’6” PF Carmel- McRoberts is steadily improving. Although he is thin, he is physical in the paint. He rebounds extremely hard and he can knock down the open outside shot. Around the basket, he has a pretty consistent half-hook that he uses to finish over defenders. I would expect him to get to at least 6-8 if not taller. His potential is a lot higher than his current level.
Brad Hunt 6’9” C Jennings County- Speaking of potential being a lot higher than current skill level, Brad Hunt might have the widest margin between the two in the 2014 class. He’s a true 6’9” right now and still might get another inch or two. He moves really well for a young big especially laterally. He is thin right now, but he should be able to put on some muscle easily. The thing that I really like about him is his intensity and work ethic. In a year, he could be making a lot of noise at this event as I expect him to be really good by then. Mid-majors should start looking into him now.
Austin Shelton 6’0” PG Avon- This was the first time that I watched Shelton, but I’ve heard his name since middle school. He is an athletic point guard that can also shoot it from the outside. I look forward to seeing more of him this spring.
Kendall Brady 6’6” PF Warren Central- First time seeing Brady. He definitely looks the part at 6’5” or 6’6” and probably 210. He was very active in the games that I saw him play. He moves well especially laterally and his motor is always running. I’m not sure how his skill set is at this point though. {/iACL}
