Cathedral and D1
Indiana wing Jaxon Edwards (2022) committed to Murray State on Tuesday. The highly athletic prospect attracted high-major interest but decided to pick the Racers before his senior season.
Edwards displayed flashes of athleticism and overall potential throughout his junior year for the Irish, but his game and recruitment took off with D1
Indiana. He solidified his D1 projection with a great showing against a stacked Team Thrill squad. Edwards proved that he could produce while going against high-major size and athleticism. After that, mid-major schools turned up the heat, and high-major schools started to track his play.
By the fall, Edwards sported offers from
Ball State,
Indiana State,
Miami of Ohio,
Evansville,
IUPUI, Eastern
Illinois,
Illinois State, Drake, and more. Although high-major schools poked around, no power conference team was ready to extend a scholarship to Edwards. There was a notion that Edwards would pick up a high-major offer if he waited till the spring to make his college decision. That is not the path Edwards wanted to take.
Shortly after an official visit to Murray State, Edwards decided that he wanted to be there. The Racers have a long history, but their recruiting profile took a step forward after Ja Morant. The explosive point guard made it easier for Murray State to recruit at a higher level. Edwards hopes to follow a similar trajectory as Morant.
There is no doubt that Edwards has high-major athleticism. He could go to the Big Ten and fit in athletically. The Cathedral product is great slashing to the basket and finishing at a high level. Also, he has been consistent as a mid-range shooter. One of the most prominent question marks for high-major schools was, “How well does he shoot from three?” There was optimism with his shooting motion that he would develop into a steady outside shooter, but the bigger schools wanted him to prove it a bit. Murray State knows that he will fit its system with or without an improved outside shot.
Edwards has the potential to be a special player at Murray State, especially from his second collegiate season and beyond.
