Continuing with our top available series, we look at the best un-committed point guards in the 2014 class. Ernie Duncan is the only point guard committed in the state at this point; he is bound for Evansville.
Here is a breakdown of the best 15 point guard prospects along with a scouting report on their strengths, weaknesses, and recruiting status.

P.J. Thompson, 5’9” Brebeuf High School, had one of the best spring’s of anyone in the state. He is a smart, point guard that knows when and where passes need to be made. He can also shoot it well from the outside. His height is the only thing holding him back from being a high-major prospect. Thompson reports that IUPUI, Ball State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Butler, Xavier, Virginia Tech, Wichita State, Iowa and DePaul are recruiting him the most right now. He has offers from IUPUI, Ball State, and Indiana State.
Grant Sims, 6’1” Bloomington High School North, I like Sims’ explosion off the bounce. He can really get to the rim on a consistent basis and I would like to see him do it even more. Not just looking to score when he gets to the rim, but also looking to set-up his teammates. Right now, he starts to beat his defender and often pull-ups for mid-range jumpers. He shoots it well, but not at an elite level. He has offers from Miami (OH) and Portland. Sims reports high-interest from IUPUI and UIC. Detroit, Lehigh, Ohio, and Notre Dame have also begun to contact him regularly. He plans to visit Toledo in the next couple weeks.
Tye Wilburn, 6’0” Lake Central High School, battled injuries during the start of his high school career. It looks like he is fully healthy and is back to playing at a very high level. He is a good outside shooter, strong with the ball, and is a force getting to the basket. If he stays healthy, he will be a mid-major prospect before it is all said and done. No offers right now. Wilburn will visit Northern Illinois Sunday and Valpo at the end of the month.
Xavier Ringo, 5’8” Brownsburg High School, Ringo is built in the same mold as Pike 2013 point guard Zavier Turner. Both are undersized, but extremely quick. Ringo is a bit more pass-first than Turner is right now. He only attempted 13 three-pointers this past high school season, but he has shown the ability to knock down the outside shot this spring. Although he is only 5-9, he has the explosiveness to score at the rim. Ringo reports hearing from DePaul, Notre Dame, Xavier, Butler and Ohio. No offers yet.
Justin Baker, 5’7” Cathedral High School, had a very good June with his Cathedral team. I did not get a chance to see him in July with SYF. He shot the ball from the outside much better in June. That is a key for his college potential because of his height. He will not be able to consistently finish at the rim at the next level, so he must be able to knock down outside shots to keep the defense honest. I love his quickness and the improvement that he showed in June, we will see if he keeps that up.
Tayler Persons, 6’1” Kokomo High School, has a few great qualities for a point guard…he is a leader, he is tough as nails, and he can hit open outside shots consistently. Now, his lateral quickness is a big concern for the next level, defending will be very challenging. That quickness might also stop him from getting into the lane consistently. I think he will be able to overcome those weaknesses with the right low-major program though.
Eric Davidson, 6’1” Hamilton Southeastern High School, He’s a great, consistent shooter although the release is a little slower than I would like. He is also crafty with the ball and can get to the basket then finish with a floater. Strength is his biggest drawback. He is very thin and can get pushed around easily. If he adds strength, he has a chance to be a D1 prospect. Davidson will visit Miami (OH) in the near future.
Cory Smith, 6’0” North Harrison High School, Smith is one of the best shooters in the class and has range out to 25 feet. He’s more of a shooting guard right now and needs to transition into being a point guard if he is going to be a D1 player. His handles need to improve especially against pressure. If he becomes a steady ball-handler, he could be a really nice low-major player.
Michael Beatty, 6’1” Ben Davis High School, Beatty is strong, physical, great defender, and can get to the basket consistently. He is a tweener between a point guard and shooting guard right now. His defensive ability is what really stands out to me. He has a chance to develop into a really good player in the next two years under Mark James at Ben Davis.
Michael Bush, 5’7” South Bend Adams High School, very undersized, but lightning quick and one of the best passers in the class so far in the state. He’ll likely need to grow at least a couple inches to be able to compete at the D1 level.
Whit Rapp, 5’11” Guerin Catholic High School, not very quick, but rarely gets rattled against pressure. I’ve seen him handle pressure from the top guards in the nation. He is smart with the ball and always is looking up the court. Rapp will likely be a very steady D2/NAIA point guard.
Jeff Harris, 5’9” North Central High School, is a very good shooter. Harris usually plays within himself and doesn’t try to do too much. He likely needs to be a step quicker to make up for his lack of height although he is very strong.
Trey Johnson, 6’1” South Bend Washington High School, He has a good first step, pretty explosive. He is very good on the defensive end and makes things happen by getting into passing lanes. He is best when attacking the basket, but it looks like he can shoot it from the outside as well. He kind of looks like he is more of a shooting guard right now than a point, but should be able to transition to the point with his athleticism. If he refines his skill set, he has a chance to be a low-major prospect.
Bo Burkhart, 5’11” Evansville Bosse High School, another player that is more of a shooting guard but is in a point guard body. Burkhart shoots the ball extremely well from the outside and that is his biggest strength. He does not handle the ball well against pressure and does not make point guard quality decisions passing the ball. He has a chance, but has a lot of areas to improve to be a D1 prospect.
Jordan Furlow, 6’2” Speedway High School, is one of the more interesting prospects in the state to me because I have not seen a lot of him. He is extremely quick though with good length for a point guard. Defensively, I’ve seen him impact the game in a big way. Offensively, I do not have a good feel for his strengths and weaknesses. He is certainly a very good athlete though. We will be working to see him more in the near future. {/iACL}
