(Garwey Dual in early April)
2023 Carmel High School and G3 All-Indy guard Garwey Dual continues to receive scholarships as Providence, Arizona State, TCU, and VCU have recently extended offers. How exactly did his soaring recruitment go from zero to one hundred this spring? Indiana Basketball Source details the rise.
Indiana Basketball Source went through Dual’s game and recruitment earlier this spring. The article (found here) showed that Dual’s advanced numbers with Carmel stuck out much more than his counting stats. That has been proven this spring with G3 All-Indy.
Indiana Basketball Source saw ten Carmel games during the 2021-2022 season. Dual averaged just over ten minutes per contest after moving to Carmel from Houston for his junior year. He still made an impact despite the minimal minutes. His defense against eventual Mr. Basketball Braden Smith flipped the sectional championship game against Westfield from a 13-point deficit to a Carmel lead in the third quarter.
Before the high school season, Dual made Indiana Basketball Source’s list of 2023 potential breakout players. His flashes against Lafayette Jeff in a scrimmage showed his potential. Dual’s defense stood out first, and has been the case with many D1 schools this spring.
Dual’s potential popped out during the high school season, even in limited minutes. It was evident his defense alone could make him an attractive D1 prospect. Indiana Basketball Source called him a low to mid D1 prospect in a Carmel High School evaluation report. Clearly, he has already surpassed that projection.
Dual’s game has gone to a new level this spring, but most of it results from getting a chance to show his game. He had limited opportunities playing ten minutes per game for Carmel as a junior. He took advantage of his minutes for the Greyhounds most of the time, but there were games that he did not find a rhythm or produce.
With G3, Dual plays the bulk of the minutes and gets offensive freedom. Carmel wants to control the tempo and limit turnovers. Dual is dynamic off the dribble, but he has a loose handle in traffic resulting in more turnovers than desired. That does not mesh well with the Carmel system.
The positive news is that Dual took advantage of his situation with G3 All-Indy this April and May. His defensive quickness, awareness, and energy project well to the high-major level. Plus, he does things offensively that few players can execute. That is why power-conference teams have jumped on Garwey Dual.
Dual’s offer list now includes VCU, Providence, Arizona State, TCU, Fresno State, Southern Indiana, Purdue-Fort Wayne, UAB, and IUPUI.
Where will Dual take his game from here? Indiana Basketball Source will be tracking that.
