INDIANAPOLIS—The 2025 3A state final between Crispus Attucks and South Bend St. Joe was marked by many as the game of the day, and it lived up to the expectations. The game went down to the wire with Chase Konieczny’s putback dunk with under a minute to play proving to be the difference in St. Joe’s 56-52 win.
The pace was quick from the start, favoring neither team. Although St. Joe’s scored 113 points in a semi-state game, Attucks does not mind playing fast either. The pace stayed quick for most of the game, but it was under control most of the way.
St. Joe junior Nick Shrewsberry was one of the players pushing the tempo to begin the game. On Attucks’ first miss, Shrewsberry took the rebound the length of the court to draw a foul on Dez Briscoe. He continued to play well throughout the game.
Briscoe, a senior who de-committed from Iowa last weekend, controlled the paint early. He turned back four St. Joe shots in the opening period. He also rattled the rim with a dunk on the offensive end.
Sophomore Elijah King helped spark a 7-0 St. Joe run in the second quarter. He scored nine points in the second quarter by slashing to the hoop and hitting one three. King’s aggressiveness set the tone for St. Joe throughout the second and third quarters.
Senior point guard Chris Hurt four points, three rebounds, three assists in the first half for Attucks. He was the Indianapolis City Player of the Year through his consistency, and he provided that to Attucks once again in the first half.
St. Joe opened the second half with a 5-0 run to increase its lead to 11, but Attucks kept getting defensive stops and cut its deficit back to six heading to the fourth.
The fourth quarter started off as a rock fight. The typically high-scoring teams were each held to six points in the first four minutes of the period.
Hurt converted a four-point possession (free throw and three after his miss) to give Attucks a chance with 2:44 to play. Attucks’ run reached 9-0 run to tie the game with just over a minute to play.
With the game tied at 50, Shrewsberry’s stepback shot from the right side was off the mark, but Konieczny flew above the crowd for a tip dunk with 52.2 to play. St. Joe never gave the lead back.
This was the first boys basketball state title for St. Joe. The Huskies lost in the state championship game last year.
King recorded 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the win. Shrewsberry added 16 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Konieczny finished with 10 and 11 rebounds, while Ethan Roseman had six points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Briscoe had 17 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks in the loss. Kayden English contributed 13 points, and Hurt tallied eight points, five rebounds, and five assists. AJ Jones scored seven points in the loss.
