First look at Broad Ripple this season. They are led by Indiana University signee Ron Patterson. Broad Ripple lost to Cathedral on Saturday by 18 points. We saw Guerin Catholic scrimmage against Cathedral so we were familiar with their personnel. Guerin beat Hamilton Heights on Friday.
Broad Ripple started off the game shooting extremely well from the outside. Seniors Mo Cross and Ernest Burton each hit a triple and it looked like it might be over from the start if they continued to shoot like that. Guerin Catholic stayed close though with offensive balance.
Cross was hot all game long. I had him 8-8 from the field including 3 of 3 from beyond the arc. He played within himself and took good shots. Cross played up to his potential without trying to do too much which he has a habit of doing.
Aaron Brennan was quiet early, but sparked a Guerin run late in the first half. He did all of his damage in the paint. He was certainly much more productive when he was posting up than when he was on the perimeter. Guerin took a 1 point lead to the locker room because of the late run.
Guerin continued that momentum into the second half. They looked really good for the first 3 minutes of the third quarter, but then Broad Ripple turned up the pressure. Patterson, who was held to 1 first half point, got a breakaway dunk that jumpstarted his offensive game. Guerin didn’t quit though and Broad Ripple only led by 1 going to the final quarter.
It was a back and forth game in the fourth quarter. Patterson was very big for Broad Ripple. He had 9 of his 16 points in the final period. He hit two free-throws to put Broad Ripple up 51-50 with 15 seconds left. On the in-bounds pass, Broad Ripple trapped and fouled Guerin senior Riley Rapp. That sent Rapp to the other end for a 1 and 1.
Unfortunately for Guerin, Rapp missed the front end. Broad Ripple hit their two foul shots and Guerin couldn’t get a good look at the buzzer. Broad Ripple escaped with the 53-50 win.

Broad Ripple
Ron Patterson 6’3” SG 2012 (Indiana University) Patterson was coming off of a rough 10-26 shooting performance against Cathedral. He didn’t shoot the ball well tonight either, but he knocked down free-throws to win the game.
Mo Cross 6’3” SG 2012 This was the best game I’ve seen Cross have. Besides the fact that he didn’t miss, he also only had one turnover. The downside to Cross has always been handles and decision making. Either forcing shots, passes, or drives, but tonight he just took what was there. If he played like that consistently, Cross would be a low-major prospect. He has a chance, but he will have to prove the consistency over the year.
Ernest Burton 6’4” SF 2012 Burton was quiet and he has too many quiet games for my liking. He has the ability to be much better than he is, but he rarely asserts himself. He is a good athletic, nice length, and can shoot the 3.

Aaron Brennan 6’5” SF/PF 2014 I’ve seen Brennan twice now against solid competition and I am not very impressed. He isn’t an athlete…vertically or laterally. Now, he is still a sophomore so he might grow more. For him to be a high-major prospect, he will need to get to 6’8”. He has a nice outside shot, but he isn’t automatic by any means. His biggest offensive weapon right now is his back to the basket game. He was successful in the post because Broad Ripple doesn’t have anyone over 6’4”. Against Cathedral, his post game was taken away by guys like Jared Drew and Collin Hartman. He is shaping up to be a mid-major prospect much more than a high-major.
Riley Rapp 6’1” SG 2012 Rapp is an undersized shooting guard that can handle the ball a little bit. Unfortunately, that was the same description I used for him when he was a sophomore. He has improved his handles a little bit from then, but not much. He could be a nice fit for NAIA/D3 programs.
Bryan Hall 6’4” PF 2012 Hall did some nice things. He was active on the glass. He showed an inside/outside skill set. He is just on the thin side. If he was stronger, he would be an option for a lot of NAIA/D3 programs. {/iACL}
