Game Recap: Homestead vs. Carroll

The final night of SAC play saw two longtime NHC rivals who have moved over to the Summit Athletic Conference do battle in front of a packed Carroll Fieldhouse crowd. Using a fantastic defensive effort on Chargers leading scorer Jacob Redding and a big effort off the pine from Grant Raber, Homestead pulled away in the second half to notch a road conference win.

Carroll established the pace early on by extending possessions and looking to exploit the Spartans' switching defense. The drive and kick offense resulted in threes from forwards Anthony Martin and Riley Perlich. Homestead would counter with triples from Parker Manges and Onye Ezeakudo as the score was knotted at six. Another three and a bucket from Perlich helped stretch the Homestead defense and give the home side a three point lead after eight minutes.

In the second period, Homestead would go to their big man, Brandon Durnell. Durnell, a Spring Arbor commitment, showed a soft touch in the lane on his way to five points in the period. Defensively, Homestead switched across all five positions, taking away a lot of screening action for Carroll and open looks for senior guard Jacob Redding. The result would be just five points scored in the second quarter, giving Homestead a two point lead heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw one of Homestead's reserves help stretch their lead out. Standing just 5'10, Grant Raber would find space around the rim to either convert or get fouled by the much bigger Carroll front line. Raber would score 11 in the second half as Carroll would be forced to speed up their offense. Jack Ferguson would hit a pair of three pointers in the quarter as well, and Homestead would lead by eight heading into the fourth.

Homestead's lead would get as high as 14 after a Brandon Durnell three and bucket from Raber. Some turnovers would help Carroll close back to within eight, but Homestead would steady the ship and walk away with a hard fought road win.
