Merrillville used efficient shooting and strong defense to defeat South Bend Adams in the first game of the Michigan City Regional Saturday morning.

The game was headed to be a shootout in the first quarter. Adams and Merrillville were getting quick looks on the offensive end. Merrillville’s Mileek McMillan was slipping free in the paint. That was a theme for Merrillville’s offense. Guard Mike Green was in attack mode, like normal, for Adams.

Johnny Bernard helped change the game in the second quarter. The junior guard had seven points in the second period along with a few assists and a couple steals. His play allowed Merrillville to outscore Adams 27-11 in the frame.

Adams wasn’t able to get easy looks – no transition baskets, open three-pointers or driving layups – against Merrillville’s defense. The Pirates had a quickness advantage and shut off the Adams drives before they began.

Cameron Wilbon had in an impact in all areas of the game for Merrillville. The 6-foot-5 forward crashed the glass for 10 rebounds. He added 15 points and three assists as well. Wilbon has been fantastic throughout his senior year.

Merrillville’s offense found itself converting in the lane seemingly every possession. Those good looks led to an offensive rating of 134 for the game. Mileek McMillan was 6-6 from the floor with all the shots coming within three feet of the basket. Jonah Jackson cashed in 6-8 shots on his way to 19 points.

Merrillville controlled the second on its way to a 75-49 victory.

Junior wing Walter Ellis finished with 18 points to lead Adams.

Merrillville will play the winner of the Warsaw tonight.
