Wettig Finals: Columbus N. vs. Richmond

Columbus North beat Fort Wayne North, while Richmond defeated Jeffersonville to reach the championship game of The Bob Wettig Tournament on Saturday. It was the first loss of the season for Fort Wayne North. They bounced back to beat Jeffersonville 90-66 in the third place game behind the play of senior Oosha Mitchell.

Columbus North had the game plan of making junior guard Joel Okafor beat them from the outside. They had 6-foot-9 Elliott Welmer on the 5-foot-9 point guard. It was basically a one-man zone daring Okafor to take as many outside jumpers as he would like. Okafor did just that. He was 6-14 from the field in the first half with most of his attempts coming from outside of the lane. Okafor finished the game 8-22 before fouling out.

2015 forward Josh Speidel has been on a rebounding terror lately. He continued that in the first half with 8 rebounds. He was especially active on the boards in the first quarter. It seemed like Speidel had a hand on every rebound in the opening quarter. Speidel finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Another factor of the sagging defense by Welmer on Okafor was to ensure that Columbus North did not have to help off of shooter Michael Tillman. Tillman hit six three-pointers in the morning game against Jeffersonville, and had 16 3s in the first three games of the tournament. Tillman finished with 16 points, but the majority of his points were after Richmond was in a large hole. He was 2 of 6 from three-point range.

Richmond made a mini-run, but Columbus North was able to gather themselves to stem the momentum. Columbus North won the Bob Wettig Tournament for at least the third straight season. Elliott Welmer and Trent Larson were named to the all-tournament team while Speidel was named the MVP.

Columbus North   21  17  23  20---81

Richmond            10  16  11  23---60

Columbus North: Kooper Glick 10, Evan Henry 5, Trent Larson 21, Christian Glass 7, Josh Speidel 24 points, 11 rebounds, Elliott Welmer 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks.

Richmond: Kendal Baker 5, Davious Webster 6, Isaiah Rader 6, Abdul Shabazz 2, Michael Tillman 16, Joel Okafor 21, Devin Thomas 4, Zach Lett 6 rebounds.
