Trevor Andershock and Jeff Schoenle continue to break down each sectional in Indiana. This article focuses on each and every 2A sectional aross the state.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 33 - Bishop Noll. Lake Station (15-5) and Bishop Noll (16-3) meet in the first round. This game will likely decide the sectional champion. They have already met twice and Bishop Noll has won by 15 and 16 points. I don't put it out of question that Dwayne Haden leads Lake Station past Noll, but I'm taking Noll.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 33 – Bishop Noll. The school in Indiana happiest with the tournament success factor? Hammond Bishop Noll. Not because they moved, but because Bowman Academy is no longer in their sectional. Indiana University baseball commit Larry Crisler also shines on the hardwood, and has help from fellow seniors Tyreon Gates and Marquis Tarver. Their toughest challenge should come in the opener against Lake Station.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 34 – North Judson. I like Rensselaer Central but the draw is too nice for North Judson. Rensselaer and North Judson have not met yet this year. That game could happen in the finals.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 34 – North Judson. Another wide open sectional that could see any one of 4 teams win it. North Judson has the easiest path, and that could be enough for the Bluejays. Don’t count out the host Rensselaer Central though.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 35 – Westview. Praire Heights has the easier draw/path to winning the sectional, but I'm going with Westview. Praire Heights won the last match-up between the two schools.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 35 – Westview. The hosts will have to get by a feisty LaVille team in the semis and then an anticipated matchup against Prairie Heights in the championship. Westview defeated Heights by 10 in the regular season. Prairie Heights junior guard Jacob Heller is good enough to carry his team to an upset if he gets going.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 36 – Adams Central. Eastside against Woodlan is going to be a good game and the winner will be in a good position to win the sectional. Adams Central has a much easier path than Eastside or Woodlan though, that's why I am picking them.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 36 – Woodlan. The Warriors are the favorite thanks to power forward Jaylin Bennett. The standout on the gridiron possesses impressive athleticism and footwork for his size. Their main challenge will come from their opening round opponent, Eastside.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 37 – Lewis Cass. Cass has won 14 games in a row. Southwood or Manchester will be a tough match-up in the second round for Lewis Cass. Cass is playing well, and they should advance.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 37 – Lewis Cass. It’s been 11 years since Lewis Cass and stud guard Beau Bauer went undefeated on their way to a state title. They are the heavy favorite in this sectional, but could get tripped up by either Southwood or Manchester in the semifinals.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 38 – Seeger. The four teams other than Seeger and Fountain Central have combined for 15 wins on the season. Seeger has the bye, so I am giving them the edge over Fountain Central.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 38 – Fountain Central. High scoring junior forward Ethan Woodrow and classmate Koby Pierce are the standouts for the host Mustangs. The only other team above .500 is conference rival Seeger, who would face Fountain Central in the semis. The teams split their two meetings this year.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 39 – Tipton. 2007 is the last time that Tipton did not win their sectional. I don't think that streak will end this year. Sophomore Mason Degenkolb is scoring 24 points per game for the Blue Devils.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 39 – Tipton. Gone are Mike Crawford and his 2,000 plus career points. Enter high scoring sophomore Mason Degenkolb. The hosts Alexandria will be a tough out in the opener, but look for Tipton to continue their winning tradition.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 40 – Frankton. Wapahani is 19-1 and has the much easier path, but I think Frankton has played great all season. Wapahani is a great team as well with Wright State signee Grant Evans and 2014 unsigned forward Jacob Foster. Lipscomb bound Aaron Korn recently scored 47 points against Muncie Central. Winchester could also be dangerous with the bye. 2016 forward Kiante Enis is a big-time scorer for Winchester.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 40 – Wapahani. Two of the most talented 2A teams reside in this sectional. High scoring wing Aaron Korn (Lipscomb) and Austin Compton are the main weapons for Frankton, and Wright State signee Grant Evans and forward Jacob Foster carry the torch for Wapahani. Something tells me that Wapahani will avenge their only loss of the year, a 19 point defeat in late December at the hands of Frankton, and cut down the nets on Saturday night.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 41 – Union County. Northeastern is 18-2, but I'm taking Union County. UC lost to Northeastern by five points just a couple weeks ago. Knightstown (11-8) has the only bye in the seven team sectional. It won't be an easy road for the eventual champion.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 41 – Northeastern. Northeastern and Union County have set themselves apart from the rest of the field, and are on a collision course for Saturday night. Four players average between 10.4 and 11.7 points per game for Northeastern, including freshman Tyler Smith. Union County is led by senior forward Hunter Miller. The two teams split their regular season meetings.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 42 – Park Tudor. Trevon Bluiett and Park Tudor would be heavy favorites no matter what in this sectional. They also received a great draw though. Park Tudor has a bye while Indianapolis Howe and Scecina are on the other side of the bracket. Park Tudor should understand that they have to focus on every opponent after losing to Broad Ripple in the sectional last season. Howe and Scecina are very talented teams that can't be overlooked this season.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 42 – Park Tudor. The two time state champs are under new leadership in first year coach Kyle Cox, but return scoring machine Trevon Bluiett and an excellent supporting cast. The Panthers lead the state in scoring, but have proven they can win playing up tempo or a slower pace. The most exciting game could be a semifinal matchup between Howe and Loyola (IL) commit Harris Brown and Scecina with TJ Henderson and Gary Bonds.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 43 – Indianapolis Attucks. No dominant team in this sectional. Attucks and Triton Central have byes and they should meet in the championship game.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 43 – Crispus Attucks. A bunch of Indy schools make the trek to Shelby County, where Attucks and host Triton Central are the top teams. They each drew byes and would face each other for the championship if they both make it there. The quickness and experience of Attucks makes the difference.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 44 – Speedway. The opening round game between Cloverdale (19-1) and Speedway (12-6) will likely decide the sectional winner. Cloverdale guards Cooper Neese (2017) and Marquise Moore (2015) both average more than 20 points per game and shoot the ball really well from the outside. Jordan Furlow and Anthony Jones will need to bring their defensive focus to win this game for Speedway.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 44 – Cloverdale. Speedway has won 7 straight, and super athletic point guard Jordan Furlow and junior wing Anthony Jones are talented enough to carry the Spark Plugs to the title, but Cloverdale has only lost once this year, to Tri-West, and features a dynamic duo of their own with freshman shooter Cooper Niese and junior point guard Marquise Moore. The two teams meet in an opening round game on Wednesday.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 45 – Switzerland County. Milan has the bye, but they will have to get through Switzerland County (16-3) to win the sectional. Switzerland County won the first match-up by five points.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 45 – Switzerland County. Switzerland County should roll in their opener against Southwestern. A 13-6 Milan awaits in the semifinals, but Austin could come from the other side of the bracket to claim the title. Huntington signee Austin Clark is the best player in the sectional.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 46 – Clarksville. I like Clarksville's Andrew Jones. Clarksville (17-2) and Crawford County (17-3) haven't met yet this season, and they face each other in the first quarter.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 46 – Clarksville. A team from southern Indiana that doesn’t get talked about a lot up north is Clarksville. They lost to 3A powers Bowman Academy by 3 and Brownstown Central by 8, and defeated Corydon Central and 4A Jeffersonville. Senior guards Calvin McEwen and Andrew Jones both average over 18 points per game for a team that shoots 40% from behind the arc.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 47 – South Knox. South Knox has the bye then will face a team under .500 to get to the championship game. That is why I am favoring them over Linton-Stockton, Sullivan and North Knox.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 47 – South Knox. A first round matchup between last year’s 2A runner up Linton-Stockton and Sullivan should be a barn burner, but South Knox has the best draw of the field. This might be a case of South Knox winning because the other side of the bracket beats each other up, leaving a clean path to the title.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 48 – Perry Central. Perry gets the bye then will play either the 6-14 North Posey or 5-15 Tell City team to get to the championship game. That shifts things in Perry Central's favor instead of Evansville Mater Dei, South Spencer or Forest Park.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 48 – Perry Central. Again, Perry Central has far and away the best draw of the field, getting a bye and then a 6-14 team in the semifinals. Mater Dei and South Spencer play in a Tuesday opener, with Forest Park waiting in the semifinals.
