3A Sectional Preview/Predictions

It is sectional week in Indiana! We continue our preview and predictions of the 3A class. It should be a fantastic tournament at the 3A level. Here's a quick look at every 3A sectional...

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 17 – Bowman Academy. Bowman has played an incredibly tough schedule and they won 16 regular season games against that schedule. 2014 forward Justin King has had a very good season. He was a consistent scorer and rebounder for Bowman. 2014 guard Arthus Haggard stretches the floor with his outside shooting while 2015 wing Davon Dillard provides athleticism in transition. Bowman will face either Hammond or Griffith. Hammond is withouth 2015 point Antonio Poole the rest of the season with an injury. Griffith has 2016 twins Anthony and Tremell Murphy. They provide many different aspects for Griffith with their athleticism. They also have 2014 point guard Flint Powell has had many big games for Griffith this season. Bowman should win this sectional with relative ease.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 17 – Bowman Academy. Last year’s 2A champ moves up due to the tournament success factor, and it’s a typical Marvin Rea team filled with quickness and athleticism. They should be able to roll through this field without difficulty.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 18 – Andrean. Andrean lost a ton of seniors off of last year's semi-state team and then they started this season 0-3. They rebounded with a 6-game win streak right after their 0-3 start. Andrean has a good draw in an overall weak sectional. I expect an Andrean-New Praire final with Andrean coming out on top.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 18 – Andrean. The 59ers got a late start to their season due to a state football championship, and they should be able to add a sectional basketball trophy to the mantle. A possible matchup with New Prairie would await them in the finals.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 19 – Mishawaka Marian. I like 2015 point guard Devin Cannady and Mishawaka Marian, but they will have a tough road. They start off with Jimtown then will face Culver Academy. If Marian gets past the first two opponents then they will likely face South Bend St. Joesph's in the final. St. Joesph's beat Marian in overtime during the regular season. I pick Marian to avenge their loss on their way to the sectional title.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 19 – Mishawaka Marian. Look for the title game to be an all Catholic affair with Marian and South Bend St. Joseph facing off. That would be a rematch of a January 17th game that saw St. Joseph win by 3 in overtime. Junior point guard Devin Cannady leads the charge for Mishawaka Marian.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 20 – Western. West Lafayette and Western match up in the first round. That could decide the sectional winner. West Lafayette has 2016 point guard Nai Carlisle leading the way. He is a dynamic guard with a burst off the dribble. Western is led by 2015 guard Des Balentine. He is a high-scoring guard that has deep range. I'm picking Western to edge West Lafayette in the first round then win the sectional.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 20 – West Lafayette. Coach Dave Wood and the Red Devils have a tough opening game against Western, but provided they win, they should have a clear path to the title. Sophomore Nai Carlisle has emerged as the go to player for West Lafayette.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 21 – NorthWood. Northwood is led by seniors Jonthan Wilkinson and Zach Zurcher. Wilkinson is headed to Hillsdale College and Zurcher will play at the University of Indianapolis next year. They both average around 20 points per game. NorthWood has had a great season. It will not be a given that NorthWood will walk away with the sectional though. Tippecanoe Valley is a 16-3 team while West Noble is 16-5.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 21 – NorthWood. NorthWood’s only loss was by 2 to a 17-2 Northridge team. West Noble started the season 11-0 before a 3 game losing streak at the start of February. One of the losses in that streak was by 17 to NorthWood. The two schools are on opposite sides of the bracket, and poised to meet on Saturday night. Tippecanoe Valley could play spoiler in the semis against NorthWood.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 22 – New Haven. Dayton signee Steve McElvene leads the way for New Haven. They are the best team in the field and they received the only bye of the sectional. Dwenger is a solid team with lots of seniors. They could give New Haven some problems.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 22 – New Haven. Coach Al Gooden made a few trips to Indy with Harding, and he’s back with a talented squad led by 6’11 Dayton signee Steve McElvene. They received the bye, and could face a Bishop Dwenger team in the championship that was close with New Haven through 3 quarters in a regular season contest. Leo took New Haven to double OT earlier in the season as well.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 23 – Norwell. Norwell has a trio of David Vogel, Drew Shivley and Austin Hayden.Hayden is a junior while Vogel and Shivley are seniors. They are in good shape to win Sectional 23. Eastbrook and Mississinewa both received a bye and sit at 13-7 on the season.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 23 – Norwell. The Knights are the class of the field in this sectional. They could face conference foe Columbia City in the finals, a team Norwell beat by 13 in the regular season.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 24 – Hamilton Heights. The bracket sets up for a championship game of Hamilton Heights (17-3) and Yorktown (15-4). Both teams are younger teams overall. Hamilton Heights has Grant Weatherford (2015), Hunter Crist (2016) and Garrett Paull (2015) all playing a major role. Yorktown has juniors Caleb Morey, Riley Neal and Riley Miller all averaging double figures.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 24 – Hamilton Heights. Grant Weatherford and Hunter Crist headline a Heights squad that has won 9 straight. The Huskies are looking to repeat as champions, but Muncie Central and Yorktown will be looking to claim the title as well.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 25 – Frankfort. Frankfort is the only team with a winning record heading into postseason play. Frankfort has been playing really well lately; they are on a 7-game winning streak. Brody Kirby and Christian Smith each average 15 points per game for Frankfort.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 25 – Frankfort. Sectional 25 is composed entirely of Sagamore Conference rivals, and the host Hot Dogs with have their hands full with Lebanon in Tuesday’s opening game. If they advance, Crawfordsville defeated Frankfort by 13 in the regular season. These teams are all familiar with each other, so a team with new wrinkles could sneak up and claim this sectional.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 26 – Guerin Catholic. This sectional is much difference with Brebeuf's PJ Thompson out. Guerin Catholic received the bye. They will face the winner of Herron against Marshall. Guerin Catholic is poised for a postseason run with seniors Aaron Brennan and Whit Rapp along with Matt Holba. Herron stayed close with Guerin for a half in an early season match-up. Herron is a good team but they don't match-up well with Guerin.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 26 – Guerin Catholic. Every team in this field is .500 or better. The two favorites, Brebeuf and Guerin, met earlier in the year with Guerin taking a win on their home floor. PJ Thompson leads the way for Brebeuf, who will need Adam Kroot and Aaron Banks to step up if they are to avenge their loss. Guerin boasts an impressive frontline of Aaron Brennan and Matt Holba, and point guard Whit Rapp runs the show.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 27 – Danville. My first thought was to go with Tri-West, but I'm going with Danville after looking into it. Tri-West has 2015 point guard Trevor Waite. He averaged 18 points per game this season while improving his shooting. 2015 forward Luke Callahan averaged 16 points per game for the 17-4 Danville Warriors.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 27 – Danville. A Tri-West-Danville semifinal matchup would be the highlight of this sectional. Danville won by 12 in the regular season, and junior post Luke Callahan is a tough cover for opponents.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 28 – Northview. Owen Valley has an easier path, but I like Northview to win this sectional. Northview faces Edgewood in the semi-finals.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 28 – Owen Valley. Owen Valley and Northview are the only teams above .500 in the field. Owen Valley is playing in the single Tuesday night game, and a matchup between the two schools would take place in the title game. Owen Valley won the regular season meeting 45-42.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 29 – Greensburg. This sectional is set up for Greensburg and Batesville to meet in the finals. That is one of the most fierce rivalries in the state. Greensburg beat Batesville by 30 points in the last meeting. Bryant McIntosh, Sean Sellers and Ryan Welage are trying to win back to back state titles for Greensburg.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 29 – Greensburg. The host team leads the state in scoring margin, and their only loss came in overtime to Madison. The three head monster of Northwestern signee Bryant McIntosh, Ball State signee Sean Sellers, and junior Ryan Welage looks to repeat as state champs. On the other side of the bracket, rival Batesville and 6’5 junior wing Bryan Hoeing will try and pull the upset in a title game matchup.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 30 – Browstown Central. This might be the toughest 3A sectional in the state with Brownstown, Corydon Central, Madison and Silver Creek. Corydon Central is 18-3 and led by junior forward Bronson Kessinger. They are a great team, but they have a tough draw. That is why I am picking Brownstown Central in this sectional. Nothing would surprise me in this sectional.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 30 – Corydon Central. There are plenty of quality teams to choose from, but athletic forward Bronson Kessinger makes the difference. Brownstown and Corydon battled through 2 overtimes earlier in the year, and Madison was the only school to get the best of Greensburg. Don’t count out Silver Creek either. Any one of these teams is capable of advancing to regionals.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 31 – Heritage Hills. Senior Devon Merder averaged 19 points per game this season for Heritage Hills. They will face Vincennes Lincoln in the first round. That should be a very good game. Southridge is another contender in this sectional.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 31 – Southridge. Vincennes Lincoln and Heritage Hills will battle in an opening round game Wednesday, but look for the host school playing in the other Wednesday game to emerge from this field. Southridge is currently on a 10 game winning streak including wins over sectional opponents Washington and Heritage Hills.

Trevor Andershock's Take:

Sectional 32 – Evansville Memorial. Princeton and Bosse are also in this sectional. Memorial has been playing well lately and they also have the bye. 2015 forward Adam Eberhard has had a great season for Memorial.

Jeff Schoenle’s Take:

Sectional 32 – Evansville Bosse. Bosse and Princeton met in the first game of Bosse’s season, and they could meet again for the sectional title. Both teams will have to come from Tuesday games to get there. It will be a good gauge to see how each team has developed from their early season meeting if that game comes to fruition. Perry Fairow and Bo Buckhart are an experienced backcourt for Bosse.
